Hi Nice NRaven. Ace comabt 3? I still play that time to time.

I only learned with Gmax few days ago. Thought I too would contribute to the community.

Any ways, here is a kitbashed Scorpion II. I wanted it to resemble almost like a panzer III.

Comes with d and d1 models.

You can find various tutorials here, here, here, and in many other places. The best place to start if you want to learn how to make your own models and add them is Killasmods' tutorial, which starts here.

Adding models to the game is fairly simple. If you download a model linked in this thread, you will get a folder which will usually contain something like:

ModelName.w3d
ModelName_d.w3d
TextureName.dds or .tga

The w3d files are the models, and the dds or tga files are the textures. The _d suffix marks it as a battle damaged version of the model. You need to put the w3d files in Zero Hour Data/Art/W3D and the textures in Zero Hour Data/Art/Textures. If you're using vanilla Generals, then switch Zero Hour Data with Generals Data and you've got it. Either way, now the game has access to the right files.

To get them in the game, you need to edit the ini file where the unit you want to modify is located. For instance, if you wanted to modify the Battlemaster tank as used by the default Chinese faction, you would need to open up Zero Hour Data/Data/INI/Object/ChinaVehicle. Open it with whatever text editor you please. You will see that "Object ChinaTankBattleMaster" is, conveniently, the first entry.

The part that controls how the tank appears is listed near the top, under "Draw = W3DTankDraw ModuleTag_01." The section is short for the Battlemaster, so I'll just paste it here.

Each ConditionState heading describes how to draw the model under different conditions. The only conditions you have to worry about for most units is DefaultConditionState, REALLYDAMAGED, and RUBBLE. Under each of those headings you will see a model listed, like

To use a different model, you would change it to.

Code:
    DefaultConditionState
      Model               = ModelName


If the model came with a battle damaged version, then just do the same thing for REALLYDAMAGED.

Code:
    ConditionState = REALLYDAMAGED
      Model               = ModelName_d


If it didn't come with a damaged version, then just use the undamaged model again. If you don't switch it at all, then as soon as the unit takes enough damage it'll suddenly morph back into the original model.

You shouldn't have to worry about the rest of the code. "Turret" describes where the point of articulation is for the turret, and the bones for where on the model certain things should happen. Modelers tend to use common names for these, so you shouldn't have to worry about it. If they don't, they should at least list the new bone names in a readme file.

That about covers it. There are more complicated instances, but the same principles apply. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

It's been a very long time since I checked, but as I recall, the default infantry are 400-500 polygons, and default vehicles are around 700-800 polys. You can go well beyond those numbers since it's been 15 years and computers are capable of way more, but I think there are engine limitations that keep you from getting too crazy. Still, you can probably get away with likeā€¦800 or even 1000 poly infantry and nothing really bad will happen.
